One of the most common questions asked by vinyl collectors is: Can warped vinyl records be fixed?
The answer is yes, in many cases slightly warped vinyl records can be successfully flattened and restored to playable condition. However, the success of any repair depends largely on the severity of the warp. Records that are badly deformed may be beyond repair, but minor to moderate warping can often be corrected at home.
Why Do Vinyl Records Warp?
Vinyl records begin to soften at temperatures of around 60°C (140°F). This means that records left in direct sunlight, near radiators, or stored in hot environments can easily become warped.
Many collectors have discovered this the hard way after leaving records in conservatories, cars, or even playing them outdoors on a hot summer’s day!
The good news is that carefully reintroducing heat in a controlled manner can sometimes return a warped record to its original shape.
How to Flatten a Warped Vinyl Record
To attempt this method, you will need:
- Two clean, flat sheets of glass approximately 13 inches square.
- A perfectly flat surface.
- Optional: one or two heavy books for additional pressure.
Most local glazing or framing shops can easily supply suitable glass at relatively low cost. Always handle glass carefully and ensure the edges are smooth to avoid injury.
Method 1: Using Sunlight
On a warm, sunny day:
- Thoroughly clean both sheets of glass.
- Place the warped vinyl record between the glass sheets.
- Lay the glass-and-record sandwich on a perfectly flat surface in direct sunlight.
- Optionally place a few heavy books on top to provide gentle pressure.
- Allow the assembly to cool completely back to room temperature before removing the record.
This gradual warming and cooling process may help flatten minor warps.
Method 2: Using an Oven
Some collectors prefer using an oven, but extreme caution is required, and it is suggested that you test this method first with an old worthless record!
- Preheat your oven to approximately 70°C (158°F) and no higher.
- Turn the oven off completely.
- Place the record between the two sheets of glass.
- Carefully place the glass assembly into the warm oven.
- Leave it until the glass and record have cooled naturally back to room temperature.
Never remove the record while it is still warm.
Adding a little weight on top of the glass may improve results, but excessive pressure should be avoided.

Before attempting to flatten valuable records, there are several important precautions:
- Always test the process on a low-value or damaged record first.
- Never exceed the recommended temperature.
- Excessive heat can permanently destroy a record.
- Handle glass with care to avoid injury.
- Valuable or rare records may be better treated using professional record-flattening services.
